The underpainting technique can also help to unify a painting in that the base color will shine through, helping to tie together the different areas of the painting.So there are different ways to use an underpainting, and for different reasons
The big problem of course is the loss of white in your range of color choices if you have an underpainting, or at least the white of the paper you can always go to a tube white but lots of "purists" might would argue against that; I do agree however it is real easy to get mud if you don't know how to do this and you pick the wronge colors in my following painting grey color in different dilutions but Green and yellow above works different tonal effects
