It is your mind's impression of the overall colour of an object. For instance a margarite might have white as its local colour, but if you were to attempt to portray it realistically you would need to employ, in addition to the colour in your palette that most closely resembles the local colour, other colours that lend themselves toward shadows and highlights in order to create the impression of form.
